Blog 13

my favorite poem was William Carlos Williams The Red Wheelbarrow for it's simplicity and still complex meaning.  the least favorite poem was the Richard Cory poem by Robinson i found it confusing to read and understand.  it was also close to my coy mistress in my mind.

the short story i enjoyed the most was Man with Enormous wings. by Garcia Marquez i liked how it told a story of a man who fell and was treated awful but in the end changed his life and others that were involved with him.  the least favorite was the Lottery By Shirley Jackson i found it repulsive that they do what they did just for fun and tradition.  this story reminded me about how the salam trials in the 1700's were like and i didn't like that either.

i feel that death of a salesman should stay it gives plays a good meaning that when family unity dies what will happen and that not every family is happy.

i enjoyed the films in class but i still found them confusing on how the video portrays character.  in the Bartably one they made the main character look like a mentalist or murderer.  in death of a sales man the Willy was seen as a abusive father who hits women. despite that they were good videos.

my favorite activity in class was when matched the quotes of the short stories into catagories.
i had fun organizing them and copying it to help me get a perfect on the matching portion of the test.  i feel this will help students out the most for tests in your class.

diary 2 from the eyes of Happy to his children

Dear Diary,
The day is April 20th 1970 im trying to tell my two kids about their grandfather Willy.   I told them that Grandpa Willy was a hard working man who provided enough for Biff and I when we were growing up.  he was so kind to us that he would take time after work to play with us in the back yard.  he would tell us stories of the future and his plan to make it big time to have our lives be better.  He gave us the motivation to be who we are now.

As the years went on in his job of being a salesman for a firm it took a tole on him that turned him foul towards the end of his life.  Biff and i would do everything we could to provide for Willy and show him that we loved our dad a lot.  your Grandpa would have loved to meet and shower you with his love.

Remember this children your grandpa was a wonderful man who provided a lot to me and your uncle Biff and for that we want you guys to remember him as the man he was great for not the madness part at the end.        you kids would have loved your grandpa.  i miss him so much and wish he was here.  i hope when my kids have kids im around to see them and do the cool grandfather things my dad missed out on.

Diary

April 13 1919
Dear diary,
i had so much passion of a man who loved his family before anything else. Willy and i were on our honeymoon talking again about the future.  as i gazed into my new man i loved so much his words somehow felt tense.  i thought to myself what if he goes crazy what will i do to help him?   i love you Willy my dear with all my heart and will always love you.  i had that white dress on... the one Willy likes a lot and will show Willy why i am the women for him. i love Willy i love Willy i will tell myself this till i grow super old with him.

October 14 1941
Dear diary,
it's the date of October 14 1941 i know i haven't written in this diary since i was first engaged to Willy my beloved husband.  Willy has turned foul in the mood he is portraying on the children and me.  I remember a time when my Darling Willy would come home with a glow of wisdom and life in his eyes.  do you remember my sweet heart the days of old when you were my husband that loved to play with me and dream of the future with kids a great house and lots of money.  when it's all said and done we used to watch the sunset on top of the care.  i miss holding you in my arms at night.  our house we had before the kids were born was terrific do you remember that my darling?  well may be we be that happy again in the future.

The lottery and Tradition

“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is comparable to the theme concept that it can be acceptable to require the individual to sacrifice for the greater good.  In the olden days of Indian's and other cultures like; the Holy war, the salon witch trials and some native tribes.  they all would do sacrifices just to keep the fear of the unknown and the hope of great fortune alive in their society.  the lottery story is not much different, "Guess we better get started, get this over with, so's we can go back to work." this quote from Mr. Summers shows that they want to get it over and move on without regret and to keep the tradition alive.  another quote from the book is, "Seventy-seventh years i been in the lottery," this shows that they have kept the tradition alive for that long.  the story doesn't stop till the village people draw a winner which in turn is ironic because the winner gets killed by stones.

In society we keep traditions alive in our own way in the Africa some tribes keep the ways of their ancestors by killing each other and taking their body parts as a symbol of victory.  The best modern day example of sacrifice is when children bully others for attention or to feel big.  the person that is being picked on is like the winner in the lottery story.  they both get beaten by a symbolic object for the story the women got stoned and for the child it could vary from verbal to physical harm.  either way both are victims of tradition that needs to either change or drastically improve.

I relate this lottery story to the story of lord of the flies the boys stranded on a island go primal and start killing one another for survival and to keep order in the society.  my question for the author is this what was her motivation to write this and did she feel like the women in the lottery at the end picked and sculled for her work?

"Girl" Imitation

BOY

Living in a small town with a limited population of people. At an early age they expect young boys to act the same at home and out side with the town. Boys are veered  to the town as a young father.  When taught you either get it once or get out of town.  Boy look at your posture you look like a troll under a bridge.  When sitting in a chair be upright and forward, no slouching, no sleeping and no eye turning.  Boy sit up look at me when i speak to you. When you spit your liquid out aim for the trees or any nature close to you.  When approached by the opposite sex you will smile and say "Hello miss." do you have that?  If a girl advances on you stay calm and ask how they are and what they want from you.  Most girls in this town want protection or a person of comfort.  You may protect them but watch yourself too.  At school listen to your teachers they are the in ring parent of the building or room that you sit in.  After school you will walk safely home with two or more friends.  The friends you walk home with must live at least a block or three away from our house. If you get hurt, don't cry in-front of others do it here where you can be shamed by no one.  Every Monday when you get home from school i want homework done, choirs finished before the evening draws breath in this house.   When it's time for bed your mother or i will read you a story and tell you your doing great at being our boy.  On Tuesday i want the same thing done except you don't have to finish any choirs you didn't finish Monday   You will continue this routine until Saturday on this day you have our permission to go and have fun.  We ask to let us know where you are and what you are doing so in case of emergence you can hustle back to the house to tend to the house.  As our son you are responsible for keeping watch over the house while we are away.  You may not have anyone except family or approved friends over at these times.  Boy we trust you with everything and we hope that you are safe at home while we are gone.  You can always call us if your in danger or feel unsafe.
Now my boy we wish to say we love you and we teach you these things for the future.
We love you our son.

The fight
While walking home it came to be that this day was no win for me.  It started out fine then turned bad when my friend yelled out with a face and voice of that of a woman scorn from pain. I knew she wanted to rumble with words.
“You are going to be late again you fool!”
I reacted as best I could, “I will be fine we are doing calculations on the plans for this week.  I’m trying to see if you wanted to hang….”
As I continued she interrupted me, “Why haven’t you got anything to wear today? And why are you not looking at me when you talk?”
I told her, “I will wear what I want. This is not casual work day this is the day we plan I don’t need to look good.” Her voice echoing though the halls of the house I knew that I was in for more.
She said, “What is wrong with you your acting like you don’t give a care about the world and me!”
As a counter measure I responded with, “But I do care about you dear I really do I just don’t see the point about fancy dressing for a meeting about plans that’s all.”
Her face now red with blush and anger both which I thought I would stay away from.  She crept closer to me with footsteps of a giant walking to Jack like in the story Jack and the Bean stock.
“I noticed your doing that thing again!”
“What thing I have no idea what you’re barking at?”
“You know well I see that you want to go but I say then go leave with shame on your face.”
“You know what I’m lost in this talk so I will leave.”
"You do that, also have a great day."
"Wait what? oh o.k. have a good day too talk to you later."
As the fight digressed know one knows who won that day as for me I say I took a good licking and I know in the future there will be more.  People say we are a married couple fighting I just say she wants to vent on a pillow that is me.
